L’Illustrazione Italiana – initially called “Nuova Illustrazione Universale” – was founded in Milan in 1873 on the initiative of the publisher Emilio Treves. It became a much acclaimed weekly, circulating the most among the upper middle classes and middle classes, thanks to the quality of its articles (written by Pirandello, Carducci and Verga, among others) and of its illustrations, often the work of famous artists such as Achille Beltrami and Luigi Bompard.
